Hoping to hear previous sermons at St. Paul’s? …

Sunday services are held at 10:00 am and alternate between the traditional (BCP: Book of Common Prayer) and contemporary (BAS:  Book of Alternative Services) format. Sunday school programs run each week during the service, and the Sunday School program finishes in time to allow all members of the St. Paul’s spiritual family to enjoy Communion together.   St. Paul’s welcomes all baptized Christians to partake in Communion, and invites all others to come to the Lord’s table for a blessing.

Unless a Sunday closure is posted on this page by 8.00 am on the day, the church will be open for the scheduled liturgy. (We also post on our Facebook page and send a parish email to those who have subscribed to this list, as well as edit our voicemail notice for those who do not use our website or Facebook).

Please practice Social-Distancing Protocols (posted in the church) when visiting, and we do appreciate the wearing of masks, although not mandatory.  Please do not visit if you are experiencing any symptoms of COVID19 or any other contagious illness.  Thank you!

TYPICAL MUSIC & ART AT ST. PAUL’S!

OUR ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE

DECEMBER 2018:  St. Paul’s Artist-in-Residence Nathan Little completed his visual Advent narrative and display … the 4th Advent print.  After the liturgy, Nathan facilitated a printing session at the back of the church (rear Nave) where all could see the original carvings and folks were invited to make a print for themselves! Thank you Nathan Little for always sharing your exciting ideas with our congregation (and including them)!

THE MAGI’S ANNUAL TRIP!  It is so enjoyable to yearly anticipate this journey as Nathan takes St. Paul’s Facebook followers on a tour of Halifax from the perspective of our mini wooden Magi figures, and each year they take a different route so viewers are always happily surprised.  To cap it off, at our Epiphany Sunday service, Nathan’s ‘Journey of the St. Paul’s Magi’ is displayed in full via our Powerpoint for the congregation.

CREATE SPACE:  This was open to all ages and FREE.  Children of ages 3+ and their care-givers/parents were welcomed.  COVID interrupted the fun, of course.  Pending schedules and timings … this popular Saturday gathering at St. Paul’s Parish House just may resurface, one never knows!

HOLY WEEK:  Nathan’s art at St. Paul’s always brings an inspiring viewpoint from The Gospel perspective.  During Holy Week, in 2018 he introduced our congregants to his visuals of the ‘7 stations of the cross’.  These artistic expressions had a deep impact on many parishioners as they listened to The Word.  We are grateful that these works of art appear yearly, still.

“INWARD/OUTWARD”:  In 2019, Nathan’s “Visual Perspectives on St. Paul’s Church” event was a photo series exploring St. Paul’s place in the city of Halifax from the point of view of neighbours, passersby, and members.   #halifax #halifaxchurch #halifaxns #inwardoutward     Others were invited to submit their own unique perspectives of this 1750 building on Facebook.

MUSIC AT ST. PAUL’S

Music features prominently in the spiritual life of St Paul’s, and worship services are enhanced through the work of the church’s gifted music team under the direction of the multi-talented Andrew Killawee (also Producer Arcadia Entertainment, Quinpool Rd., Halifax).   Past examples are below …

HALIFAX JAZZ FESTIVAL AND ST. PAUL’S:   The parish annually hosts featured Artists from this yearly event.  St. Paul’s has welcomed performers such as Juno award-winning pianist and vocalist Laila Biali in concert (presented but he Halifax Jazz Festival). You may know Laila’s name from her many recordings, from hosting CBC’s “Saturday Night Jazz”, or you may have read about her – described by the Washington Post as “masterfully mixing jazz and pop, bringing virtuosity and unpredictability to songs that are concise and catchy”.  Or Elise LeGrow … Heather Bambrick … The Liebman/Murley Quartet … Iskwe … and many others in our pledge to support the Arts and Entertainment community of Halifax.  In 2018, we welcomed a jazz quartet featuring two of Canada’s acclaimed multi-JUNO award winning musicians – David Braid (piano) and Mike Murley (saxophone) – along with a formidable rhythm section comprised of Danish drummer Anders Mogensen and Finnish bassist Johnny Aman. (Their recording “The North” won the 2018 JUNO Award for Jazz Album of the Year).   Andrew Killawee is also the President of the Board of Directors of The Halifax Jazz Festival, b.t.w.

OUR TALENTED CHORISTERS:  Our Sunday Choir has developed a reputation for having ‘high standards’ under the direction of Andrew Killawee.  Whether they are accompanied by The Casavante Organ or the sweet sounds of the Nave’s grand piano … the combination of heart-felt harmonies and impeccably pressed ivories leaves those in the pews filled with blessed sensations on Sunday mornings.  Choristers and parishioners are also encouraged to share their own worship gifts …

During contemporary services (BAS), music is provided by a wonderful instrumental ensemble featuring singers, as well as a variety of wood wind, percussion and stringed instruments (our St. Paul’s Music Team)!

Below, is a link to BLESSING – CANADA, a wonderful compilation of music from various churches across Canada (including St. Paul’s where you can catch a glimpse of Andrew Killawee if you watch close):

MUSICIAN-IN-RESIDENCE:  The talented St. Paul’s Musician-in-Residence (Ian Bent) hosts occasional concerts with original material such as ‘Meditations’ (piano solos to accompany the spirit of the Lenten Season).  St. Paul’s also receives the pleasure of Ian’s piano/organ skills during times when Andrew is travelling the globe filming for Arcadia Content.

The Music Director of St. Paul’s also supports others in the congregation to share their musicianship.  One example below … The Duet Acacia (our Office Manager Gail Fulop and her husband Wayne Slaunwhite):

St. Paul’s regularly welcomes outside groups to our historic Nave, warding off any concerns that the parish may be an ‘artistic clique’.   The Ottawa Children’s Choir shared a splendid performance in 2018, with parish volunteers assisting and the evening generating $418 for St. Paul’s Outreach programs.  https://www.ottawachildrenschoir.ca/

“Choirs For Change”! is another welcomed addition to the musical offerings experienced at St. Paul’s on a regular basis  http://www.choirsforchange.ca/

VOICES was held in May 2020!  We gathered online to enjoy music by two parish musicians and to hear from three parishioners about how they’d been experiencing the Corona crisis through the double lens of their faith and their profession. Our three speakers included a journalist, a former labour organizer, and a judge.  It was our first online ‘live’ event (replacing our Spring Tea because of COVID restrictions) and thanks to many volunteers it ended up being more successful than we’d anticipated!

OTHER EXAMPLES OF WELL-ATTENDED EVENTS

Our ‘GREEN PLANET SUPPER June 2019 fundraiser:  Thanks to food/cash donations plus ticket sales, we produced over $3,250 for our Outreach activities.  A sincere ‘thank you’ to everyone who contributed, and made it  so successful, especially those at the helm (our Chancel Group!).

THE TULIP TEA (June 2018) brought over 100 visitors who gathered to share in music, food, silent auction and most of all … fellowship!  The net result from that event was $2,546.00. The monies were applied to St. Paul’s Outreach Activities: 1) The Fish; 2) The Rector’s Discretionary Fund; and 3) The Wednesday Lunch.

Over 1,100 visitors came through our doors for DOORS OPEN 2018!  ‘Thank you’ to the volunteers of St. Paul’s who donate their weekend to this event, we couldn’t do it without you!

September 2018 gave THE ZUPPA THEATRE COMPANY an opportunity to share their impromptu skits for a week at St. Paul’s.

‘Happily busy’ would be the perfect short description of the St. Paul’s Family!

We invite you to mark your calendar for these regular events that occur yearly:

Remembrance Day

Our Volunteer HOT CHOCOLATE TEAM hosts this annual deliciousness to those who visit the Grand Parade during the Civil Ceremony each November 11th.

Christmas On The Grand Parade (COTGP)

Due to its popularity, we’ve expanded this event to include 2 evenings each year during the Advent Season:

the first a few Mondays before Christmas Eve and the second on Christmas Eve!
